About Nurse Jessica Sites

Nurse Jessica Sites, has over two decades worth of experience in the healthcare industry, as a labor and delivery registered nurse in Tampa area in Florida who knows all too well the emotional trauma, yet gratifying moments nurses go through on a daily basis. After 20 long years of 12 hour shifts, she finally took a leap of faith to become a full-time social media influencer who uses her platform, decades worth of healthcare experience, and comedic talent to be voice for workers in the healthcare industry while also being an outlet for other nurses and other healthcare professionals who are facing challenges in their career, and helps to bring awareness and educate them on their options as they navigate the many stresses, nationwide nurses shortage crisis, changes in the healthcare industry, and major societal challenges plaguing the healthcare industry. Now over 2 years later, Nurse Jessica Sites has become a trending social media sensation and is proud of how far she has come in such a short amount of time. She says that if she can give someone even a little chuckle in the midst of their crazy chaotic lives, then she believes she has accomplished her goal

About Nurse Erica

I have worked in nursing since I graduated high school, first as a CNA, then an MA, then a Registered Nurse, and eventually in nursing leadership. I discovered my love of pediatric nursing early on, having worked in pediatrics, PICU, pediatric oncology, and pediatric hospice. Throughout my career, I ventured into adult nursing for a few years, home health, and periodically worked in wound care (I love wounds!). More recently I have specialized in both pediatric and adult hospice (ask me about pediatric hospice, I could talk about it for hours!). But nothing has fulfilled me as much as advocating for my fellow nurses.

Advocating for nurses is something that has always come naturally to me. It was as a new grad nurse, that I first encountered the toxicity that runs rampant throughout the nursing profession. I will never forget the feeling of sitting in my manager's office, just weeks into my first RN job, being told I was a failure and threatened with termination because she hadn't received enough compliment cards about me (HCAHPS scores). I remember being so confused. I'd received nothing but positive feedback from patients and coworkers. How can they discipline me when I've never been in any trouble or even informed there was an issue? The manager had the identical conversation with my close friend, Marlene. Marlene and I went through nursing school together and started this job together. This incident started a downward spiral of depression for Marlene and she eventually took her own life. I knew even then that the nursing profession needed to change. I continued to be confronted with toxic harassment, bullying, vertical violence from management, unsafe working conditions, and gaslighting throughout my career. I am proud to say that I always spoke up against it! Always! Even as a single mom, with everything to lose, I continued to report wrongdoing and advocate for my patients and coworkers. I have paid the price for that advocacy at times and I would do it all again.

I never thought I would go into nursing leadership. Truth be told, I am the least likely nurse to go into leadership. I quickly discovered I could affect change much more in leadership, than I could as a staff nurse. And that's exactly what I did. Then one day, early on in the Covid-19 pandemic, I decided to post a video about being in nursing leadership to TikTok. The rest, as they say, is history. It wasn't long before I co-founded The Last Pizza Party, a grassroots nurse advocacy movement. This ultimately became a challenging journey to navigate and witness colleagues chose different paths. I soon expanded across other social media platforms and as an author. I found my niche in nationwide nurse advocacy and nurse led legislation, dividing my time between legislators, unions, and nurses in need.
~Nurse Erica

New York Times best-selling author, Tom Mueller PhD, joins Nurses Uncorked for part two of the discussion on corruption in the Dialysis industry. His book is titled, How to Make a Killing:  Blood, Death, and Dollars in American Medicine.
In the 1960s, dialysis in America was a miracle cure, on the cutting-edge of high-tech medicine. Dialysis represented the first time that doctors had replaced a vital organ with a machine. Dialysis became, in 1972, America’s first (and to date the only) “Medicare for All” condition, when Congress pledged to pay the dialysis treatments of virtually all Americans with kidney failure.
Since then, however, dialysis in America has degraded to 1-size-fits-all, assembly line care. Non-profit centers have been bought up by for-profit firms, eventually creating a duopoly between DaVita Dialysis and Fresenius . Harmful practices such as short, high-speed dialysis sessions (termed “bazooka dialysis” in the book), and the involuntary discharge and subsequent blackballing of dialysis patients, are widespread. Patient outcomes, mortality etc in the US are substantially worse than any other developed nation. Yet at the same time, cost of treatment has skyrocketed.
We dedicate these episodes (part 1 & 2) to those fighting chronic kidney disease; and to the brave dialysis patients, dialysis nurses, techs, and informants who continue to fight.

Travel RN Coach (@lindseys_leisures), Lindsey, joins Nurses Uncorked to discuss her recent viral video in which a patient made alarming threats against their former ER nurse at Peace Health Southwest Medical Center. The repeated threats included very specific identifying details of the nurse's family, begging the question, how were they able to find this information?
The answer lies in The 21st Century Cures Act, first passed in 2016. Many medical professionals remain unaware of The Cures Act. And patients often do not understand the complications it poses to their care. Why do patients have access to nurses' full names? Is this a safety risk that employers should mitigate? What role do electronic health records, like Epic, Cerner, or Meditech play? Should patients have real-time access to their medical records?
Join us as we break down The Cures Act and it's ramifications.

DISCLAIMER:  This episode discusses graphic details of a case involving fetal death and decapitation during the labor process. Listener discretion is advised.
This is a follow up to episode #6 (link below).
New information has recently been released in the case of the decapitated infant at Southern Regional Medical Center, Atlanta, GA, in July, 2023. Parents allege the OBGYN, Dr. Tracey St. Julian, applied excessive traction to the the baby's head causing it to detach during the labor process. The complaint also alleges the hospital and staff did not disclose the decapitation and the parents were permitted to view their deceased infant only through a window, with the head propped in place. Nurse Jessica Sites, a labor & delivery nurse of 22 years, lends her expertise in this area.
Since the original episode aired, the medical examiner recently released the manner of death as homicide. Additionally, a second civil law suit has been filed against the pathologist for allegedly posting autopsy photos on social media. We also dive into recent interviews with the parents and attorney, both of whom seem to indicate the nurses may be at fault. Will this be another case of nurses being criminally prosecuted?

DISCLAIMER:  This episode discusses the in custody death of an inmate and the events leading up to it. Listener discretion is advised.
In December, 2019 Forsyth County jail inmate, John Neville allegedly fell off his top bunk and exhibited seizure like symptoms. Five correctional officers and one correctional nurse, Michelle Heughins RN, a correctional nurse on duty, responded to his cell. He was held down prone by the officers. The nurse was often not granted access to Neville, who was first responsive and fighting, then later becoming unresponsive. Upon finding the patient had no pulse and was not breathing, Nurse Heughins called for an AED and began CPR. Neville died of positional asphyxiation two days later in the hospital. The five officers and one nurse were criminally charged with involuntary manslaughter. However the Grand Jury decided to ONLY indict the nurse.
Correctional nurse, Michelle Heughins RN, joins Nurses Uncorked to tell her story, the three year court battle, and the outcome of her case. This is a story of courage and resiliency, but also a story of the ongoing persecution of nurses.

DISCLAIMER:  This episode discusses the subject of suicide. Listener discretion is advised. If you are experiencing thoughts of self-harm or suicide, please call or text the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline at 988.
We are having the crucial conversation about nursing burnout or what we like to refer to as moral injury. We discuss the well known and the not so well known signs and symptoms of burnout and how workplace violence plays a role in it. @themassholemcguido (@themcguidonurse) is back by popular demand to weigh in on this and the alarming suicide rate among nurses. What should you do if you are experiencing any of these signs? Is it okay to leave the toxic job or even the profession? And just how common is moral injury and suicide in nurses? As usual we add in some humor to this heavy subject (because nurses always have a dark sense of humor). This is an important episode for new nurses, experienced nurses, and loved ones of nurses.
