A Message from Nurse Erica

My nursing career began immediately after high school, evolving from CNA to MA, then to Registered Nurse, and eventually into nursing leadership. Early in my journey, I discovered my passion for pediatric nursing and have worked across pediatrics, PICU, pediatric oncology, and pediatric hospice care. Though I've explored various specialties including adult nursing, home health, and wound care (which I absolutely love!), nothing has fulfilled me quite like advocating for my fellow nurses.

The call to advocacy came when I first encountered the toxicity permeating our profession as a new graduate. I'll never forget sitting in my manager's office just weeks into my first RN position, being threatened with termination because I hadn't received enough compliment cards. My close nursing school friend Marlene experienced the identical conversation, which tragically led to a spiral of depression resulting in her taking her own life. That profound loss cemented my conviction that our profession desperately needed change.

Throughout my career, I've confronted bullying, harassment, unsafe working conditions, and organizational gaslighting. Despite being a single mother with everything to lose, I consistently spoke up against these injustices and reported wrongdoing. While I've certainly paid professional prices for this advocacy, I would make the same choices again without hesitation.

Leadership was never in my original career plan—in fact, I considered myself the least likely candidate for such a role. However, I quickly discovered that from a leadership position, I could effect meaningful change more effectively than as a staff nurse. During the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, I posted a video about nursing leadership to TikTok that unexpectedly resonated with many, launching a new chapter in my advocacy work.

This led to me attending nursing strikes, content creating, and hosting this podcast, Nurses Uncorked. I've found my purpose in nationwide nurse advocacy and nurse-led legislation, dividing my time between working with legislators, unions, and supporting nurses in need.

Your continued support genuinely means everything to me. Together, we're creating a stronger, healthier profession for all nurses.

"It is physiologically contraindicated for nurses to remain in practice"
Nurses Uncorked welcomes back Dr. Lorre Laws PhD, RN to the podcast. In this episode, Nurse Erica shares her personal journey as the primary caregiver for her mother with Alzheimer's Disease. This conversation delves into the impact of unintegrated trauma on nurses and the necessity for self-compassion to aid in recovery. The discussion highlights the silent epidemic of nurse-specific trauma and how it affects nurses' mental and physical health. The statistics reveal high rates of PTSD, depression, substance abuse, and suicide among nurses. The conversation emphasizes the need for a deeper understanding of the nervous system and the importance of addressing personal and professional struggles faced by healthcare workers. The discussion also touches on trauma education lacking in nursing programs and asks the question - are nurses being traumatized to monetize?

In this eye-opening episode, Nurse Erica sits down with Bob Funk, creator of LaborLab, the only nonprofit watchdog organization tracking corporate spending on union-busting. Bob pulls back the curtain on the multi-million dollar industry dedicated to keeping healthcare workers from organizing, revealing how hospitals and healthcare systems spend millions of dollars on union-busting consultants. They explore LaborLab's union-buster tracker and discuss the common tactics employers use to discourage nurses from organizing, from captive audience meetings to intimidation and retaliation. Bob explains the Labor Management Reporting and Disclosure Act of 1959 and how the LM-20 forms are supposed to work—along with the troubling reality that many employers and union-busters simply don't comply with legally required financial reporting. The conversation dives into the "persuader loophole" that allows consultants to hide their anti-union activities and discuss why the PRO Act matters for nursing. They don't shy away from the controversial topic of scab nurses and the damage strike-breaking causes to both patient care and the profession. Whether you're curious about organizing, already involved in union efforts, or just want to understand the forces working against nurses' collective power, this episode is essential listening!
