A Message from Nurse Erica
My nursing career began immediately after high school, evolving from CNA to MA, then to Registered Nurse, and eventually into nursing leadership. Early in my journey, I discovered my passion for pediatric nursing and have worked across pediatrics, PICU, pediatric oncology, and pediatric hospice care. Though I've explored various specialties including adult nursing, home health, and wound care (which I absolutely love!), nothing has fulfilled me quite like advocating for my fellow nurses.
The call to advocacy came when I first encountered the toxicity permeating our profession as a new graduate. I'll never forget sitting in my manager's office just weeks into my first RN position, being threatened with termination because I hadn't received enough compliment cards. My close nursing school friend Marlene experienced the identical conversation, which tragically led to a spiral of depression resulting in her taking her own life. That profound loss cemented my conviction that our profession desperately needed change.
Throughout my career, I've confronted bullying, harassment, unsafe working conditions, and organizational gaslighting. Despite being a single mother with everything to lose, I consistently spoke up against these injustices and reported wrongdoing. While I've certainly paid professional prices for this advocacy, I would make the same choices again without hesitation.
Leadership was never in my original career plan—in fact, I considered myself the least likely candidate for such a role. However, I quickly discovered that from a leadership position, I could effect meaningful change more effectively than as a staff nurse. During the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, I posted a video about nursing leadership to TikTok that unexpectedly resonated with many, launching a new chapter in my advocacy work.
This led to me attending nursing strikes, content creating, and hosting this podcast, Nurses Uncorked. I've found my purpose in nationwide nurse advocacy and nurse-led legislation, dividing my time between working with legislators, unions, and supporting nurses in need.
Your continued support genuinely means everything to me. Together, we're creating a stronger, healthier profession for all nurses.

PART 2
It has been nearly two years since the National Nurses March in DC on May 12, 2022. We have stayed silent long enough.
Why was there two separate nurse marches the same day in Washington DC? Why did the march keep changing it's name? Were the accusations of racism true? Why didn't the march(s) accomplish anything? Why didn't any nursing associations support it? Has there ever been a successful nurses march in Washington DC? How could that many nurses show up the same day in DC and have nothing to show for it? Why was this opportunity/this moment in time squandered? Will we ever have another opportunity like this with the same momentum? We are answering all this and more.
Nurse Nina (@itsnursenina) joins Nurses Uncorked for part 2 of this two-part podcast to share what she experienced firsthand throughout the planning of the march. Nurse Jessica, Nurse Nina and Nurse Erica witnessed the unraveling behind the scenes, each from very different perspectives and involvement. After being bullied to keep quiet for nearly two years, it is time to tell the truth. For the first time ever, we are speaking publicly about what really took place and the abusive allegations one march made in an attempt at damage control against anyone that spoke out.

Fresh out of prison, Nurse Sybil Garbow and her husband, Michael, sit down for an exclusive interview with Nurses Uncorked.
Sybil has worked as a dedicated nurse for over 40 years without incident. But that didn't stop a jury from finding the 72 year old nurse guilty of felony assault against another nurse, a coworker, and sentenced her to six months in prison, five years probation and $51,000 in restitution.
The incident occurred in 2021, in the wake of the George Floyd and Daunte Wright cases. Sybil, an African American nurse was accused of assaulting a white nurse. She says she feels she was treated differently as a black woman with an all white jury, in a county that is 80% white. Sybil contends she acted in self-defense.
SYBIL CAN NO LONGER WORK AS A NURSE BUT STILL HAS TO PAY OVER $51,000 IN COURT ORDERED RESTITUTION. NURSES UNCORKED DONATED $500 AND WE ARE CALLING ON EVERYONE TO DONATE ANY AMOUNT YOU CAN. $1, $5, $20, ANYTHING IS APPRECIATED. PLEASE HELP HER BY DONATING BELOW:

Milo Bescher, a Swedish Registered Nurse recently posted a viral TikTok that showed how different (ahem, better) nursing is in Sweden, compared to the United States. After moving to New York City over a year ago, he experienced culture shock working as a nurse in America. Milo joins Nurses Uncorked to share his unique perspective on everything from lunch breaks to why nurses aren't criminally prosecuted in Sweden.

Part 2
Former Vanderbilt nurse, RaDonda Vaught, joins Nurses Uncorked, for part-two of a revealing podcast.
In 2017 RaDonda Vaught, a Registered Nurse at Vanderbilt Medical Center, mistakenly administered a paralytic medication resulting in a patient death. This lead to revocation of her nursing license (2021). In 2022, RaDonda became one of the first nurses to be criminally prosecuted for an unintentional nursing error. Ultimately, she was convicted of criminal negligent homicide and abuse of an impaired adult. Fortunately, she was able to narrowly avoid serving time in prison and was sentenced to three years of probation.
This landmark case quickly garnered international attention and shined a spotlight on Vanderbilt's culpability in this incident. The American Nurses Association, American Bar Association, Institute for Safe Medication Practices (ISMP) and many more all issued public statements in support of Vaught and denouncing the criminal prosecution of nurses. Around the world nurses expressed outrage at the blatant disregard of just culture and the dangerous precedent this set. Overnight the landscape of the nursing profession irrevocably changed for the worse and became significantly less safe for patients and nurses alike. Nurses have left the profession in the wake of the trial. Suddenly we faced not just civil litigation or Board of Nursing action, we faced criminal prosecution and loss of our freedom for committing unintentional human error.
Nurse Erica began covering the RaDonda Vaught case with the Tennessee Board of Nursing hearing, then attended the criminal trial and sentencing in person. Nurse Erica and RaDonda have since become close friends and allies.
