About Nurse Erica

I have worked in nursing since I graduated high school, first as a CNA, then an MA, then a Registered Nurse, and eventually in nursing leadership. I discovered my love of pediatric nursing early on, having worked in pediatrics, PICU, pediatric oncology, and pediatric hospice. Throughout my career, I ventured into adult nursing for a few years, home health, and periodically worked in wound care (I love wounds!). More recently I have specialized in both pediatric and adult hospice (ask me about pediatric hospice, I could talk about it for hours!). But nothing has fulfilled me as much as advocating for my fellow nurses.

Advocating for nurses is something that has always come naturally to me. It was as a new grad nurse, that I first encountered the toxicity that runs rampant throughout the nursing profession. I will never forget the feeling of sitting in my manager's office, just weeks into my first RN job, being told I was a failure and threatened with termination because she hadn't received enough compliment cards about me (HCAHPS scores). I remember being so confused. I'd received nothing but positive feedback from patients and coworkers. How can they discipline me when I've never been in any trouble or even informed there was an issue? The manager had the identical conversation with my close friend, Marlene. Marlene and I went through nursing school together and started this job together. This incident started a downward spiral of depression for Marlene and she eventually took her own life. I knew even then that the nursing profession needed to change. I continued to be confronted with toxic harassment, bullying, vertical violence from management, unsafe working conditions, and gaslighting throughout my career. I am proud to say that I always spoke up against it! Always! Even as a single mom, with everything to lose, I continued to report wrongdoing and advocate for my patients and coworkers. I have paid the price for that advocacy at times and I would do it all again.

I never thought I would go into nursing leadership. Truth be told, I am the least likely nurse to go into leadership. I quickly discovered I could affect change much more in leadership, than I could as a staff nurse. And that's exactly what I did. Then one day, early on in the Covid-19 pandemic, I decided to post a video about being in nursing leadership to TikTok. The rest, as they say, is history. It wasn't long before I co-founded The Last Pizza Party, a grassroots nurse advocacy movement. This ultimately became a challenging journey to navigate and witness colleagues chose different paths. I soon expanded across other social media platforms and as an author. I found my niche in nationwide nurse advocacy and nurse led legislation, dividing my time between legislators, unions, and nurses in need.

In this follow up to last week's episode with Jen Hamilton, Nurse Jessica Sites and Nurse Erica discuss cancel culture and their personal experiences with it. They define cancel culture as a cultural phenomenon where individuals who are deemed to have acted or spoken in an unacceptable manner are ostracized, boycotted, or shunned. They share their own stories of being canceled, harassed, bullied and the negative impact it had on their lives. Nurse Erica talks about being canceled by the veterinary community after posting a video about her dog's health issues and her experience with a vet clinic. They also discuss the damaging effects of cancel culture, including PTSD, fear, safety concerns and the potential for it to lead to censorship. With over 3.5 million followers, Jen Hamilton has become a beloved online personality and influencer. But even she is not immune from the pitfalls of social media. Jen Hamilton, joins Nurses Uncorked to discuss her recent departure (temporary) from social media and the damaging effects of cancel culture. Nurse Erica and Nurse Jessica share their personal experiences as victims of cancel culture.
We dive into the Hot Mess Express, fancy ladies (silkie chickens) and Shower Gate!
Cancel culture is defined (Merriam Webster) as the practice or tendency of engaging in mass canceling as a way of expressing disapproval, exerting social pressure and the mass withdrawal of support from public figures or celebrities who have done things that aren't socially accepted today. This practice of "canceling" or mass shaming often occurs on social media platforms. Cancel culture is supported as a tool to stop offensive and harmful behavior, while others find it problematic and toxic.

New York Times best-selling author, Tom Mueller PhD, joins Nurses Uncorked for part two of the discussion on corruption in the Dialysis industry. His book is titled, How to Make a Killing:  Blood, Death, and Dollars in American Medicine.
In the 1960s, dialysis in America was a miracle cure, on the cutting-edge of high-tech medicine. Dialysis represented the first time that doctors had replaced a vital organ with a machine. Dialysis became, in 1972, America’s first (and to date the only) “Medicare for All” condition, when Congress pledged to pay the dialysis treatments of virtually all Americans with kidney failure.
Since then, however, dialysis in America has degraded to 1-size-fits-all, assembly line care. Non-profit centers have been bought up by for-profit firms, eventually creating a duopoly between DaVita Dialysis and Fresenius . Harmful practices such as short, high-speed dialysis sessions (termed “bazooka dialysis” in the book), and the involuntary discharge and subsequent blackballing of dialysis patients, are widespread. Patient outcomes, mortality etc in the US are substantially worse than any other developed nation. Yet at the same time, cost of treatment has skyrocketed.
We dedicate these episodes (part 1 & 2) to those fighting chronic kidney disease; and to the brave dialysis patients, dialysis nurses, techs, and informants who continue to fight.

PART 1
New York Times best-selling author, Tom Mueller PhD, joins Nurses Uncorked to discuss his book about the corruption in the Dialysis industry. The book is titled, How to Make a Killing:  Blood, Death, and Dollars in American Medicine.

Travel RN Coach (@lindseys_leisures), Lindsey, joins Nurses Uncorked to discuss her recent viral video in which a patient made alarming threats against their former ER nurse at Peace Health Southwest Medical Center. The repeated threats included very specific identifying details of the nurse's family, begging the question, how were they able to find this information?
The answer lies in The 21st Century Cures Act, first passed in 2016. Many medical professionals remain unaware of The Cures Act. And patients often do not understand the complications it poses to their care. Why do patients have access to nurses' full names? Is this a safety risk that employers should mitigate? What role do electronic health records, like Epic, Cerner, or Meditech play? Should patients have real-time access to their medical records?
Join us as we break down The Cures Act and it's ramifications.
