After 20 long years of 12 hour shifts, she finally took a leap of faith to become a full-time social media influencer who uses her platform, decades worth of healthcare experience, and comedic talent to be voice for workers in the healthcare industry while also being an outlet for other nurses and other healthcare professionals who are facing challenges in their career, and helps to bring awareness and educate them on their options as they navigate the many stresses, nationwide nurses shortage crisis, changes in the healthcare industry, and major societal challenges plaguing the healthcare industry. Now over 2 years later, Nurse Jessica Sites has become a trending social media sensation and is proud of how far she has come in such a short amount of time. She says that if she can give someone even a little chuckle in the midst of their crazy chaotic lives, then she believes she has accomplished her goal

About Nurse Erica

I have worked in nursing since I graduated high school, first as a CNA, then an MA, then a Registered Nurse, and eventually in nursing leadership. I discovered my love of pediatric nursing early on, having worked in pediatrics, PICU, pediatric oncology, and pediatric hospice. Throughout my career, I ventured into adult nursing for a few years, home health, and periodically worked in wound care (I love wounds!). More recently I have specialized in both pediatric and adult hospice (ask me about pediatric hospice, I could talk about it for hours!). But nothing has fulfilled me as much as advocating for my fellow nurses.

Advocating for nurses is something that has always come naturally to me. It was as a new grad nurse, that I first encountered the toxicity that runs rampant throughout the nursing profession. I will never forget the feeling of sitting in my manager's office, just weeks into my first RN job, being told I was a failure and threatened with termination because she hadn't received enough compliment cards about me (HCAHPS scores). I remember being so confused. I'd received nothing but positive feedback from patients and coworkers. How can they discipline me when I've never been in any trouble or even informed there was an issue? The manager had the identical conversation with my close friend, Marlene. Marlene and I went through nursing school together and started this job together. This incident started a downward spiral of depression for Marlene and she eventually took her own life. I knew even then that the nursing profession needed to change. I continued to be confronted with toxic harassment, bullying, vertical violence from management, unsafe working conditions, and gaslighting throughout my career. I am proud to say that I always spoke up against it! Always! Even as a single mom, with everything to lose, I continued to report wrongdoing and advocate for my patients and coworkers. I have paid the price for that advocacy at times and I would do it all again.

I never thought I would go into nursing leadership. Truth be told, I am the least likely nurse to go into leadership. I quickly discovered I could affect change much more in leadership, than I could as a staff nurse. And that's exactly what I did. Then one day, early on in the Covid-19 pandemic, I decided to post a video about being in nursing leadership to TikTok. The rest, as they say, is history. It wasn't long before I co-founded The Last Pizza Party, a grassroots nurse advocacy movement. This ultimately became a challenging journey to navigate and witness colleagues chose different paths. I soon expanded across other social media platforms and as an author. I found my niche in nationwide nurse advocacy and nurse led legislation, dividing my time between legislators, unions, and nurses in need.

On February 18th, 2025 Registered Nurse Leelamma Lal, "Leela", was savagely attacked by her patient, Stephen Scantlebury, while working at HCA Palms West Hospital in Florida. She shares the details of the attack, Leela's background as a dedicated nurse and the ongoing challenges they face during her recovery. Dr. Joseph shares the emotional and physical toll of the incident on their family and the broader nursing community. The episode emphasizes the need for better safety measures in healthcare settings and calls for community support for Leila's recovery. The discussion delves into the systemic failures of hospital security protocols and the broader implications of violence against healthcare workers. The speakers highlight the need for accountability and legislation to protect healthcare workers, and the importance of mobilizing nurses to advocate for change. They emphasize the urgency of implementing security measures like metal detectors, which should be standard in hospitals. The episode wraps up with a call to action for nurses to mobilize towards change.

Tuesday Jan 28, 2025

Recorded live from the Providence St. Vincent Medical Center strike line on 1/25/25, strike day 16. Special thanks to the Oregon Nurses Association.
On January 10, 2025, nearly 5,000 healthcare professionals began an open-ended strike, calling on Providence Health & Services to put their patients before profits by offering a fair contract to frontline caregivers. The strike includes doctors, nurses, advanced practice providers, and midwives from eight Providence Oregon hospitals and six clinics.
At issue: Providence's alleged unfair labor practices, dangerously understaffed hospitals, the ability to spend more time with patients, employee healthcare, and competitive wages and benefits to be able to recruit and retain more caregivers.
In this special episode, Nurse Jessica and Nurse Erica interview three of the registered nurses, an internal medicine physician, and a certified nurse midwife. The conversation includes concerns regarding hospital administration's disconnect from patient care and the impact of management decisions on provider retention. The discussion delves into the financial dynamics of the organization, the importance of fair compensation, and the need for genuine negotiations to ensure safe patient care. They discuss issues such as high turnover rates, safety concerns related to staffing ratios, the impact of insurance changes, while criticizing Providence Health's tactics and corporate greed. The conversation underscores their determination to hold the line until their demands are met.
